Birmingham Royal Ballet’s The Nutcracker at The O2

Via Press Release:

Ballet will be returning to The O2 arena this December. From Tuesday 27 to Friday 30 December 2011 Victor Hochhauser, in association with The O2 and Universal Music Arts and Entertainment, will present six performances of Birmingham Royal Ballet‘s world acclaimed interpretation of the Christmas classic The Nutcracker, after its regular Christmas 2011 season at Birmingham Hippodrome. This follows the critical and commercial success of the Royal Ballet’s Romeo and Juliet at The O2 in June, which drew nearly 50,000 people to the arena.

Originally adapted from E.T.A Hoffmann’s original story story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King and premiered in 1892 at the Imperial Theatre in Saint Petersburg, The Nutcracker is now the most popular family Christmas show of all time. Widely regarded as the finest production of Tchaikovsky’s best-loved ballet score, Sir Peter Wright’s choreography of The Nutcracker for Birmingham Royal Ballet has been enchanting audiences since 1990 and now comes to The O2.

Determined to continue making ballet more accessible and affordable to a wider family audience, thousands of tickets for The Nutcracker will be available from as little as £10 per person and tickets for children under 16 will all be half price.

Ingrid Sutej, Director of Content Development for The O2, said:

With nearly 50,000 people visiting The O2 to watch Romeo and Juliet we have shown that there is a huge appetite for ballet out there.  We are absolutely thrilled to present The Nutcracker, performed by Birmingham Royal Ballet, at a time of year when families are spending time together. It is a magical event that just encapsulates the festive spirit in a unique way and it will make for a very happy Christmas at our venue.

Keith Longmore, Communications Director for Birmingham Royal Ballet added:

This production of The Nutcracker was the first new work made by the Company after its move from Sadler’s Wells to its new home in Birmingham. Its scale, production values, magic and entertainment sums up everything that is Birmingham Royal Ballet. To have this opportunity to bring this work back to the capital after twelve years is a prospect that is exciting everyone involved in the staging of this epic production.

The Nutcracker runs at the Birmingham Hippodrome from 25 November to 11 December; and at the O2 from 27 to 30 December 2011. General sale opens Monday 8 August. For further information and booking visit The O2 website.

We started The Ballet Bag in April 2009 with the mission to prove that ballet is not stuffy, old fashioned and inaccessible; that it is quite the opposite: relevant, fresh and topical. With the aim to Give Ballet a New Spin we try to show it under a different light. When writing our capsule biographies, ballet fact cards, review roundups and commentary on social media, we cross it over with other art forms and cultural references (pop culture, cinema, rock music – ie. other things we love!).
