Esprit de Corps: A Kickstarter Art Book Project

Jesús Chapa-Malacara is a Brooklyn-based photographer and former ballet dancer. Jesús is currently working on an innovative ballet photography project, Esprit de Corps, a ballet artbook.

Esprit de Corps brings together dancers like ABT’s Jared Matthews and Yuriko Kajiya, Michaela DePrince, who appeared in the must-watch documentary First Position and is about to join Dutch National Ballet’s Junior Company (incidentally, Michaela is a big favorite here at the Ballet Bag), plus an expanding roster of artists from ABT, NYCB and Boston Ballet.

These photos beautifully illustrate the movement of ballet through clever lighting technique and without any special editing equipment other than the odd bit of photoshopping.

In order to cover the big budget required to produce the book – it needs $115,000 of arts patronage in order to become a reality – Jesús has put together a Kickstarter campaign. Check out the campaign page for more stunning photos, details of the costs and how to get involved.

We started The Ballet Bag in April 2009 with the mission to prove that ballet is not stuffy, old fashioned and inaccessible; that it is quite the opposite: relevant, fresh and topical. With the aim to Give Ballet a New Spin we try to show it under a different light. When writing our capsule biographies, ballet fact cards, review roundups and commentary on social media, we cross it over with other art forms and cultural references (pop culture, cinema, rock music – ie. other things we love!).
