The Royal Ballet’s Swan Lake: A Photo Gallery

Artists of The Royal Ballet in Swan Lake

Having passed the mark of 1,000+ performances, Sir Anthony Dowell’s production of Swan Lake for the Royal Ballet is reported to be retiring this season, and we wonder who will be tackling Petipa/Ivanov’s huge classic for the company in the near future. We bid farewell to Yolanda Sonnabend’s designs – which celebrate Russia in the 1890s (i.e. at the time of Tchaikovsky) – with these beautiful images by Alice Pennefather, featuring Rupert Pennefather and Roberta Marquez in the leading roles:

Alice’s creative talents lie in image making. After studying photography at Falmouth College of Arts, she spent 6 years travelling and working abroad, focusing on scuba diving and filming underwater. She has recently returned to London and rediscovered her love of everything Ballet. Alice now works as a freelance photographer, and is a regular at the Royal Ballet General Rehearsals – photographing for us here at The Ballet Bag. Would be great if they kept Dowell’s text but redesigned the production to update it, but that’s probably not going to be the case…

Roberta looks great! So does Rupert! Also wondering what new production the Royal might do. Maybe one by another company, like McKenzie’s version for ABT?
