We have a new guest post up on the Royal Opera House blog, with snippets of five of Alexei Ratmansky’s coolest ballets:

24 Preludes, part of the Royal Ballet’s current mixed programme that includes George Balanchine’s Apollo and Christopher Wheeldon’s Aeternum, offers audiences the opportunity to experience Alexei Ratmansky’s first work for a UK company. Much lauded for revitalizing classical ballet and infusing it with his unique brand of inventiveness and rich cross-cultural references, the Russian choreographer makes ballets that often reveal new sides to his dancers. His works are very much in demand around the world and regularly staged in Russia, Europe, Asia, Australia, and the US.

Ratmansky started experimenting with choreography at a young age at the Moscow Choreographic Institute (the school of the Bolshoi). His dancing career would take him to the Ukraine, Canada and Denmark, where he was exposed to works by such diverse choreographers as Bournonville, Balanchine, Neumeier and Tudor, who would later influence and inform his choreographic style.

During his time as Artistic Director of the Bolshoi Ballet, Ratmansky set about re-staging historic works and revisiting ballet scores by composers like Shostakovich and Prokofiev. As American Ballet Theatre’s current Artist in Residence, he has created critically acclaimed versions of classic Russian ballets The Nutcracker and The Firebird. Known for his fresh take on dance comedies, dramas and even ‘dramedies’ (as in his most recent work for the Royal Danish Ballet, The Golden Cockerel), Ratmansky is also well-versed in plotless works, having created, in this commission for the Royal Ballet, a ‘ballet of mood’ set to orchestrated Chopin pieces for a cast of eight dancers.

(…)

To illustrate the choreographer’s diverse range, we also selected clips of some of our favourite Ratmansky works. Hop over to the Royal Opera House blog to check them out, while over here you can take a look at Alice Pennefather’s gorgeous images of the current Apollo, 24 Preludes and Aeternum mixed bill:

We are delighted to feature below a guest blog by ballet enthusiast and Professor of Culture & Communication Nelida Ferraz, who attended the Royal Opera House Gala in Rio de Janeiro’s Theatro Municipal last week.

Last week, audiences at Rio de Janeiro’s Theatro Municipal were reassured of the city’s resurging cultural landscape in a brief 3-day residency from principal dancers of the Royal Ballet. They were joined on this tour by the young artists from the ROH’s Jette Parker program, with the British conductor Dominic Grier doing his best with the theatre’s ailing local orchestra. The theatre had previously partnered up with artists of the Royal Ballet in 2011 – on that occasion a smaller group led by Thiago Soares – but this time the project was slightly more ambitious: to showcase the company’s international repertory and style, to inspire local young dancers and singers, and to foster a renewed interest in these two art forms, which are crying out for more incentive in Brazil.

Roberta Marquez as Aurora - Photo: © Bill Cooper

Audiences were given the opportunity to reconnect with locally-bred talent, ex-Theatro Municipal dancers Roberta Marquez and Thiago Soares, and to welcome their Royal Ballet colleagues Marianela Nuñez, Leanne Benjamin, Sarah Lamb, Edward Watson and Steven McRae. Even though the programme alternated opera extracts (sadly not on par with the quality of the ballet performances on display) with dancing, the latter dominated the evening in all senses. Alongside traditional gala showstoppers like The Sleeping Beauty wedding pas de deux (danced by the fizzy pairing of Marquez and McRae) and the Black Swan pas de deux (Nuñez and Soares pulling all the stops), we were treated to a contemporary selection of works that included Wheeldon’s After the Rain and Wayne McGregor’s Qualia, as well as extracts from two MacMillan ballets: Manon’s bedroom pas de deux (Edward Watson and Sarah Lamb) and Requiem (the Pie Jesu, admirably danced by Leanne Benjamin).

Marianela Nuñez and Thiago Soares in Swan Lake- Photo: © Dee Conway

This was a perfect gala mix as it exposed local audiences, who are used to more traditional fare like Don Quixote and The Nutcracker, to the variety of styles performed internationally. The audience let it show how much they approved, responding with enthusiastic applause for the dancers. The collective feeling was that the dancers left us wanting more – and what a shame the balcony scene from Romeo & Juliet had to be scrapped last minute due to an indisposed McRae – with the public speculating when the full company would finally return (seemingly, 2015). After all, their last visit “au grand complet” was in 1972, back in the days Margot Fonteyn was still the company’s leading Aurora.

About Alice Pennefather:

With a twin brother flying high as a star of the Royal Ballet, Alice’s creative talents lie in image making. After studying photography at Falmouth College of Arts, she spent 6 years travelling and working abroad, focusing on scuba diving and filming underwater. She has recently returned to London and rediscovered her love of everything Ballet. Alice now works as a freelance photographer, and is a regular at the Royal Ballet General Rehearsals – photographing for us here at The Ballet Bag.

The Royal Opera House starts its 2011 – 2012 dance season with an unexpected new dance work: The Metamorphosis is the first collaboration between award-winning director and choreographer Arthur Pita and Royal Ballet Principal Edward Watson. After last year’s critically acclaimed God’s Garden at the Linbury, Pita now brings Kafka’s surreal and dark tale to the same stage in his characteristic dance-theatre style. This commission for ROH2 features an eclectic cast and focuses on the relationship and parallels between the main character Gregor Samsa, who awakens one morning to find that he has been transformed into an insect, and his teenage sister Greta (played by Royal Ballet School student Laura Day) who is undergoing her own process of transformation as she enters into adulthood.

Ahead of the premiere on Monday, we quote Ed and Arthur on their collaboration and what we can expect from this exciting new dance work:

On Collaborating

Edward Watson:

I had seen God’s Garden at the Linbury and mentioned it in a short interview I gave for The Independent with my cultural picks. I then bumped into Arthur when he was choreographing the Royal Opera’s production of Carmen, so we got to chat and he mentioned he had “an idea around the book”. From there it all happened quite quickly. A year in all!

Arthur Pita:

The idea just popped into my head. I love the book and wondered whether it could be adapted into a dance piece. I went on holiday to Jamaica and took the book with me. I immediately thought of Ed: I have admired him through the years and thought he’d be really interesting. As I carried on reading I kept imagining Ed interpreting the character and it all became very clear. We pitched the idea to Alison Duthie at ROH2 and she immediately expressed an interest. I thought Gregor Samsa would be a good solo role for him and it’s great that he can explore it given his amazing physicality and abilities.

On parallels with modern fantasy: True Blood, the Exorcist & Cronenberg movies

Arthur:

The link is: they are all creatures. Gregor is becoming an insect and there’s that sense of “becoming a creature”, that connection between the “human” and the “non-human” and that’s where all these influences are, in the sense of someone that has been taken over by something: he’s possessed by that thing. I tend to use the word possession a lot. When I am doing narrative work one aspect I enjoy the most is that sense of character “possession”. It is exciting when you know the performers and they are not behaving like themselves because they have taken something on. In that case we’re still seeing Ed, but he is taking something on and allowing it to come into his body.

In order to observe the little quirks of insects and apply them, inventing Gregor’s own peculiarity of movement, we studied a French documentary on the life of insects – Microcosmos – and we watched David Attenborough. I also watched David Cronenberg: The Fly and Naked Lunch are particularly Kafkaesque. But the elements of horror and the family drama from the book and, again, the theme of “possession” remind me of the movie The Exorcist, where the story also unfolds in the main character’s room: she’s locked in there and people come in and out and visit her. There are so many interesting parallels between both.

On Gregor & Greta

Arthur:

There are major things going on with Gregor and his sister Greta: a constant connection. I was really trying to allow for that connection. In one scene, she plays a song for him and then she has a dream, but is it her dream or his dream? How is she metamorphosising? She’s growing from a girl into a woman. All her struggles and teenage angst and feelings, she’s expressing them on to him. Is it partly her own making that has manifested out on him that way? They have a very interesting relationship. The mother and son also have a weird incestuous relationship, there is an unspoken sexuality going on in that house.

On the Process & Preparations

Ed:

We all read the book together. I had read it when I was a teenager but revisited it this summer and, afterwards, the group got together and discussed it for nearly a week. And then things came from that week. In the book each sentence can mean four different things – there are lots of autobiographical points and references to Kafka’s own experiences – we had to choose how far to go with that or whether to stick with the main argument, which is what we tried to focus on. Everybody from the group gave input into the characters, it was a very collaborative process.

Ed:

The piece develops like a little play. We had a coach to train us in certain words we could say in the Czech language, words from the book that characters could say to each other, although my character does not have any lines. Everything from the book is in there, it’s just a different way of telling the story: it really does make sense out of the nonsense way the story is written. The staging is brilliant, in terms of how the setting is divided. Over the main room ordinary things are happening everyday: people are eating, they are watching TV, the mother is doing her exercises, Greta is doing her schoolwork, while in Gregor’s room this transformation is happening. So people enter in and out of there and become affected by that, and that plays a part on their own processes of change.

Royal Ballet Principal Edward Watson plays Gregor Samsa in the world premiere of this innovative dance-theatre adaptation of Franz Kafka’s novella of the absurd. Commissioned by ROH2, the story follows a travelling salesman who awakes to discover that he has been transformed into a giant insect. Gregor Samsa’s horrifying nightmare is brought to life by the distinctive theatrical style of award-winning director and choreographer Arthur Pita, composer Frank Moon and an eclectic cast. Designed by Simon Daw and with lighting by Guy Hoare, the Linbury Studio Theatre is altered to provide an intimate, surreal and doom-laden Kafkaesque experience.

Arthur Pita works internationally as a freelance choreographer in opera, musicals, theatre and commissions for dance companies. His work has been brought to venues such as Royal National Theatre, Sadler’s Wells, The Young Vic, Royal Albert Hall, Royal Opera House, Los Angeles Opera, Israeli Opera and Lithuanian Opera including others. Recent works include God’s Garden, an Open Heart production co-commissioned by ROH2 and DanceEast in the Linbury Studio Theatre, Mischief (TMA Award) with Theatre Rites and Street Scene (Best Musical Evening Standard Award).

In one of their riskiest and most exciting ventures, The Royal Ballet wrapped up for summer with MacMillan’s blockbuster Romeo & Juliet staged for an audience of 40,000 (split over 4 performances). The so-hashtagged #RomeO2 event was the surprise hit in a season more memorable for the hasty return of works like Ashton’s Cinderella (4 separate runs in 2 years), Sylvia or Swan Lake.

Location, location!

While some loved watching ballet at the O2 arena, those sitting very high up found the format more difficult to adapt to. I thought it a refreshing experience, as my £10 floor ticket allowed me to be closer than I have ever been to the stage. The catch? I couldn’t see the dancers’ feet, but screens allowed me to transport myself to Verona. This was a special production that challenged performers and ballet goers alike: gone were the proscenium arch, the set changes, the intimacy of the theatre. In their place, the giant screens and HD close-ups, video extras, hot-dogs and beer. On the Saturday evening performance – led by Alina Cojocaru & Johan Kobborg – if there was popcorn flying around me, I hardly noticed.

Arena productions are not the only way to widen the reach of ballet. Smaller in scale but equally exciting was The Royal Ballet Creates, an initiative we mentioned when compiling our list of “Ten Things we love about British Ballet” for the blog “Behind Ballet”. Royal Ballet soloist Kristen McNally choreographed a new work set to Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy in the middle of a busy Apple Store on a Saturday afternoon. Sessions were interactive and people who were probably there to test drive the latest iPad model were given the opportunity to sample classical dance and to win free tickets for The Royal Opera House.

New Work

The other big event of the season was the premiere of Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, a visual feast with the potential to draw families for many seasons to come (a Nutcracker for the Easter season perhaps?). Alice may not be Wheeldon’s most original piece, but it is undeniably a fun evening out. An entertaining ballet, with themes that are relevant to our times. Plus the work’s production budget, its scale and the buzz it generated made the other two new additions to the repertory – Kim Brandstrup’s Invitus Invitam and Wayne McGregor’s Live Fire Exercise – seem muted affairs by comparison.

Star Power

Audiences grow to love a company in part because of its dancers, and The Royal Ballet has unique artists who continue to capture the imagination of regulars. And when it comes to star power few companies can boast partnerships similar to Rojo/Acosta’s and Cojocaru/Kobborg’s.

The company also has many talented individual performers and I can only thank my lucky stars for being able to watch dancers like these work their magic so often:

Tamara Rojo’s Manon & Juliet – you can count on marveling at the detailed interpretations Tamara gives to some of ballet’s most complex characters.

Zenaida Yanowsky’s Swan Lake – her Swan Queen made me forget about the production’s dated designs. Here was the most elegant Odette, with beautiful phrasing and port de bras and an intoxicating Odile who had thrilling rapport with Will Tuckett’s Von Rothbart.

Edward Watson’s “Chosen One” in MacMillan’s Rite of Spring. His dance to death was piercing. We could see the panic in his eyes and the despair in his steps.

Steven McRae’s Rhapsody. Mr. Clement Crisp said it best; we were “dazzled, bowled over, knocked sideways, blown away“.

Alina Cojocaru / Johan Kobborg. A partnership for the ages. I am keeping their performances in Onegin, Giselle, Manon and Romeo and Juliet this season as souvenirs and pining over the fact they are not scheduled to dance together anytime soon. And that with every season, Kobborg gets closer to hanging up his ballet shoes.

Next Chapter

The Royal Ballet currently finds itself in a period of transition. Monica Mason retires next year and the Company has recently announced the appointment of Kevin O’Hare to succeed her, a choice that suggests continuity. At a time when ballet companies are struggling to strike the right balance between “thinking globally and acting locally”, O’Hare will face the challenges of preserving the Ashton/MacMillan/Petipa/Balanchine canon while looking at opportunities to commission work from the best new choreographers out there. In that task he will be assisted by McGregor & Wheeldon. O’Hare will also face steep arts cuts, the fact that some of the Company’s box office-friendly works need to be rejuvenated asap, and, as Graham Watts notes, he will have the responsibility of nurturing the Company’s dancers. Expectations are high and right now we can’t wait to see what happens in the next chapter.

Tonight The Royal Ballet begins its three-day residency at London’s O2. This is the first time the Company has set foot on a UK arena and, to mark the occasion, they are fielding an all-star cast to perform in Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet. Taking turns as the famous star-crossed lovers are Carlos Acosta and Tamara Rojo (tonight and Sunday), Edward Watson and Lauren Cuthbertson (Saturday matinée), plus Alina Cojocaru and Johan Kobborg (Saturday evening).

We dropped by the O2 yesterday to watch a stage rehearsal and follow the Company as they put the finishing touches to their first big scale ballet:

Three giant screens will ensure audiences experience MacMillan’s choreography at its most cinematic, with movies by the Ballet Boyz to help bridge any stage-to-screen gaps.

Having just finished ballet class, Edward Watson & Lauren Cuthbertson were trying out steps. They haven’t danced Romeo & Juliet together since 2004 and are thrilled to be teaming up again. Lauren says: “It’s a dream. Better than we can ever have imagined; it’s really lovely that we had this chance to go full circle because when we first danced it there was chemistry but not really a natural fit, so now we feel like it’s our time to dance well together!”

Ed strikes his signature “HB pencil-drawn” arabesque:

Ed & “Loz” have recently appeared as very quirky special guests in Bennet Gartside’s latest #RomeO2 video blog.
The pair had woken up at 6am for a spot in the BBC Breakfast News and still had a full day ahead, including that evening’s general rehearsal. But before “quiet time” Lauren was planning to catch a glimpse of Tamara and Carlos: “I really want to watch [their] rehearsal so I’m going to stay for a bit of Act 1 and nap in the interval. Then I’m going to get something to eat, then hair, make up and go through steps again!”

MacMillan’s Romeo & Juliet had to be adapted for the arena format, so regular ballet audiences will spot a number of tweaks in the traditional production, including the use of video for certain scene transitions. Lauren gave us an example: “There’s a bit where Juliet runs to the altar and it’s her last chance to get the courage to take the potion – but here there is no altar – so little things like that you have to suggest”

The width of the stage is very impressive. First Soloist Bennet (aka @Bennet76 on Twitter), who plays Tybalt on Saturday evening, says: “it’s actually housing our set quite well. Initially when we got here we thought ‘this is quite big’, but sometimes doing Romeo and Juliet at the Royal Opera House stage feels quite cramped – especially the ballroom scene so it’s nice that it has been pulled out.”

He thinks all this space will give the fights in Act 2 a different energy “We’re saying to each other ‘chase me!’ Because you have to use that width and then when we’re moving the crowd moves with us, so you have all that scale.”

Bennet’s clever mashup of “pop and high culture” in his vlogs has drawn the attention of the New York Times. He is feeling “Very excited. Not at all nervous – because we are used to doing this and, partly, because I don’t have to do as much as others – the possibility of performing in front of 12,000 people for me is definitely more exciting than daunting! Maybe I will get more nervous when I see the first night!”

“I think we can run wide and travel the choreography but as for gestures, the minute they’re not true… they become a bit more “Russian”, they look overly pronounced. So that’s my opinion. I won’t be understating anything but I won’t be overstating it. What hits people really is the real stuff.” Lauren Cuthbertson (@LondonBallerina) – live from the O2 – on MacMillan’s naturalistic choreography.

When Kenneth MacMillan choreographed the first British Rite of Spring in 1962 the role of the Chosen Maiden – the virgin who dances herself to death in a sacrificial ritual – was a then 20-year-old Monica Mason. Shortly thereafter the then Royal Ballet Principal Wayne Eagling became the first male dancer to take on the central role. In this current revival, Monica Mason has brought back the concept of a male ‘Chosen One’, with Edward Watson and Steven McRae – one British, the other Australian, both well-versed in MacMillan’s dramatic universe – set to make their debuts this weekend. We asked both Edward and Steven for some brief thoughts on the ballet:

TBB: Monica Mason has remarked in the past that MacMillan’s choreography for The Rite of Spring is ‘absolutely not feminine’. What do you think male dancers can bring to it?

Edward Watson: The steps aren’t feminine at all. When a woman dances it, I think it shows the strength of the human spirit but when a man dances it, it’s completely the reverse; the same steps show how vulnerable we are.

Steven McRae: I believe the Chosen One is a role that can be brought to life by either a male or a female dancer. The role is very demanding physically and getting through the piece requires a lot of psychological strength. Obviously the physical approach to the role may differ. The choreography has a lot of allegro work, something males are used to performing regularly.

TBB: How are you approaching the role? What emotions are going through the Chosen One’s head?

Edward: By making sure I know the music well and that I know the stage patterns and so on. I think about the terror and pride going through the Chosen One’s head and about the inevitability of the ritual.

Steven: You will see!

TBB: Who is coaching you? What have preparations been like?

Edward: Monica Mason has been coaching me. I haven’t needed to do any reading or other preparations as it was created for her and she knows it inside out.

Steven: I actually spoke to Wayne Eagling about the role recently at a function in Buckingham Palace; I am loving being coached by Dame Monica Mason. Working with the person the role was created on is the closest thing you can get to working with the creator. I was fortunate to work with Lesley Collier on Rhapsody early in the season, and again that was incredible because you are being exposed to details about the piece and choreography that perhaps other people may not know.
