Hot on the heels of recent Twitter memes like #lessambitiousfilms and #lessambitiousoperas, members of the online dance community revealed their inner ballet nerds earlier this month, joining in the meme fun. Many of us spent hours not doing any work, thinking instead of #lessambitiousballets. A few of you asked us to collate these tweets for [...]

Young choreographer Christopher Wheeldon created The Wanderers for The Royal Danish Ballet in 2008. This season the Company commissioned him to do a completely new version of The Sleeping Beauty. According to the RDB website his take on the classic is “a fantasy-filled adventure for both children and adults offering drama and sublime classical dance”. [...]

This Chabukiani ballet, very popular with audiences in the Soviet era and a vehicle for Russian virtuoso performers, had been dropped out of repertory somewhere around the seventies. For a while all that was left of it were selected extracts performed in [...]

The Sleeping Beauty is a staple of major classical troupes. Despite being an expensive ballet to stage, it is amongst those productions that ensure box office safety and keep dancers well drilled. It demands not only starry leads but a strong supporting cast to carry through endless variations and character roles like Carabosse and the [...]

A while ago we wrote about the joys of seeing different casts in the same ballet. While classics such as The Sleeping Beauty do not leave much room for highly individual interpretations of the central roles they still provide an interesting study of technical and artistic abilities of different ballerinas. In that spirit we took [...]
